ДЛЯ ТЕЛА

The Tretyakov Gallery

Третьяковская Галерея
The establishment of the Tretyakov family collection and the creation of the public gallery will be part of our discussion of “Merchant Moscow” later in the term. But weather and scheduling make the second week of the term a good time to visit the gallery. Find directions to the main gallery at the gallery’s homepage (станция метро: Третьяковская, выход: “к Третьяковской галерее”. Suggested blog topics: the painting that surprised you the most; the painting you had always wanted to see “live”; something new you learned about painting (Russia, yourself) from one of the paintings. Illustrations are good. If you like twentieth century art, visit the Tretyakov Gallery on Krymskii val as well.

Red Square and the Kremlin

In her cultural history of Moscow Caroline Brooke [1. Caroline Brooke, Moscow: A Cultural History (New York: Oxford University Press, 2006)] chooses objects with an eye to foreign visitors. On this page students, with the help of Russian student assistants [praktikanty] describe some object, event or phenomenon that caught their attention.

Moscow University: A City Within a City

Students reside in the main building of Moscow University on Vorob’evy gory [Sparrow Hills]. You can read about the building’s history (in Russian) at Главное здание on Wikipedia. The spaces in which the Carleton students reside were originally intended for graduate students; today they are occupied by international students and graduate students. Faculty members (and/or their descendants) reside in other wings of the university building.  Classes for students in the Philology Faculty, where the Carleton group resides administratively, are conducted in Humanities Building [ГУМ] 1 and 2.
